Our Story
Ashton Central Mosque — formerly known as Markazi Jami'a Mosque — has been at the heart of the Ashton-under-Lyne community since the early 1970s. What began in a three-storey terraced property on Stamford Street has grown into an award-winning purpose-built centre serving thousands every week.
After relocating to the former St Mary's School on Newton Street in 1979, the community embarked on an ambitious project to build a dedicated mosque. In October 2011, we moved into our purpose-built home on Hillgate Street — a three-floor facility with prayer capacity for over 1,000 congregants, featuring beauty, quality, simplicity and sustainability at its core.
In 2023, we were honoured to receive the British Beacon Mosque Award for Best Run Mosque, selected from over 300 nominations across 11 categories, recognising our commitment to community service, education, and governance.
